The demographic findings present a clear indication of who joins Hour Exchange Portland:
Most see membership as a means to help them meet individualistic needs
Most members also consider membership a way for them to help their community
Respondents are highly educated, most live alone, are politically active, engaged and are overwhelmingly liberal
Respondents are highly engaged in community, and volunteer at higher rates than most Americans
Members learned about the PTB largely from having known an existing member
PTB has been most successful in allowing members to act on behalf of the values that they cherish (such as building community and creating a better society)
The membership is largely female, white, 45 years of age or older
